COMMUNITY LIGHTS.
TRIAL IN MASTERTON.

In an endeavour to get established the community lighting of shop verandas in Masterton, detailed estimates of the cost of installing and maintaining such a scheme have been taken out by the Wairarapa 'Power Board for a block of buildings in Queen Street specially suited for such a scheme.
In reporting on the matter at to-day’s meeting of the board, the ,
secretary-manager (Mr. G. Brown) said it was estimated that after making due advance for interest, depreciation, cost of current, and repairs, that the board could provide free of any installation charge and maintain lainps for this purpose at a flat rate charge of £4 10s per annum.
The chan-man (Mr. J. W. Kershaw) said that the lights would be situated under the verandas, and the block selected in Masterton was regarded as particularly suitable for demonstration purposes. The annual charge of £4los provided for lighting from sunset until 11 p.m. It was recommended that a three years’ guarantee 'be given.
The secretary-manager was authorised to negptiate with those business people interested in the block. The chairman explained that the cost of installation (£125) would be mlet by the board. Mr. T. V. Moore said he had every confidence that other blocks would come into line. He pointed out that eighteen lamps in each block would pay the board, and all over that figure would bring profit.
