THE SHANNON BRIDGE.
COST AND ANALYSIS OF LEVIES
At last night’s Borough Council meeting the following was read from the Main Highways Board: — “It is proposed to erect a new 'bridge over the Manawatu River on the Foxton-Shannon Main Highway, plans and specifications for which are already prepared. The estimated cost of the bridge is £23,GG2, of which amount the Main Highways Board shall pay £13,442, leaving £10,220 to be contributed .by the local authorities in the following proportions:— Shannon Borough Council l/12th not exceeding £BSO. Foxton Borough Council l/12th not exceeding £BSO, and the balance equally by the Horowhenua and Manawatu County Councils. Provided that in the event of the cost of the bridge exceeding the estimate, two thirds of such excess shall be paid by the Main Highways Board and the remaining one third in equal proportions by the Horowhenua and Manawatu County Councils. In addition, it is proposed to construct approach roads one on the Horowhenua side and one on the Manawatu side. The estimated cost of the former approach road is £4,840, which shall be borne in equal proportions by the Main Highways Board and the Horowhenua County Council. The estimated cost of the latter approach road is £2,430, which shall be borne equally by the Main Highways Board and the Manawatu County Council. Both in the case of the bridge and the Horowhenua approach road, the Minister of Public Works shall be the constructing authority, and in the case of the Manawatu approach road, the Manawatu Countv Council shall be the constructing authority. A commencement has been made with the reconstruction of the bridge and it is essential, before the work proceeds further, to have an unconditional resolution from your Council agreeing to the terms of the above. Such resolution, which should be forwarded to this office under seal of your Council, should make specific reference to this letter and the plans, specifications and estimates enclosed herewith.* Tlie Town Clerk said that he had written to the Highways Board, asking that the Foxton Borough Council be credited with one-sixth of the value of the old bridge as that was Foxton’s proportion levied in connection with its erection many years ago. As yet he had received no reply. It was decided to hold the matter over until such time as a reply was received from the Highways Board.
