PALMERSTON NORTH BOOKMAKER BEFORE COURT.
A fine of £IOO was inflicted upon James Purves at the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Defendant was charged with keeping a common gaming house contrary to the Act, to which he pleaded guilty. Senior-Detective Quirke, who prosecuted, stated that accused had been betting for some time in Palmerston North, on a large scale and on Saturday bets to the value of £SO 10s were taken over the ’phone in 40 minutes. Ho asked for the maximum penalty. Nothing pievious was known against Purves. Mr. H. R. Cooper, on defendant’s behalf, admitted the offence which, he said, was illegal only in New Zealand. There had been no suggestion of his not having played the game. Mr. Stout S.M.: “He wouldn t get any work if he didn’t. The Magistrate in entering up a fine of £IOO remarked that it was. an offence to carry on the profession and defendant would have to pay for it.
