IMPROVING FLAX-MILLING MACHINERY.

SUBSTANTIAL BQNUS ASKED FROM GOVERNMENT.

In the House yesterday, Mr. J. Linklater (Manawatu) gave notice to ask the Minister of Agriculture whether the Government will offer a substantial bonus for improvements in flaxmilling machinery in connection with: Firstly, the extraction and dressing of fibre from the flax leaf, and secondly, the utilisation of the by-products obtained during the process of extracting the fibre.

For many years, he said, a bonus of £12,000 was offered by the Government for improvements in this direction. It is highly desirable that this bonus should be reinstated in order that inventors shall be stimulated to devise means of more efficiently treating flax and thereby assisting a very important and growing industry.
