A GOLD RUSH.
RUMOUR FROM THE SOUTH. lOST MOONLIGHT REEF FOUND AGAIN. A rumour of a new gold rush on the West Coast of the South Island which may possibly take place soon was brought by a visitor to Wanganui on Thursday, says the Chronicle. He said that the Moonlight Reef one of the richest gold bearing reefs on the coast had been found again by a man named Rasmussen and his son.
“The reef ‘faltered’ and has been lost for years,” said .the visitor, “and it was quite by accident that it was found. It is an irony of fate that every miner who has worked there has stood on the reef to bail his water out of the creek, little knowing that under the moss beneath his feet was dirt Avhich Avould yield ounces of gold.” The reef Avas down in a deep gully and the sun shone there for only two hours a day during three months of the year, he continued. The country Avas so rough and precipitous that, it Avould be very difficult to transport machinery to the reef.
