ROUGH RUGBY.
Some of the players in the final match for the Bush Rugby Union’s Cowan Cup at Nireaha, on Saturday, between Southern United seniors and Mangatainoka, must have been inoculated with the germ which was in evidence at the Ranfurly Shield match at Solway last month. The first half of the game was marked by a continual indulgence in fisticuffs. Mauling and “scragging” were common, and uppercuts and
“language” were much in evidence. Several players were cautioned, and one of two players who started to “mix” it early in the game was ordered off in the second spell. The game eventually developed into a free fight, and the police interfered, after which matters improved, though fighting still occurred at intervals. The referee lost control of the game, so that it became a disgraceful exhibition of Rugby, even for the Bush, where play is never geSTlo.
