TOBACCO STOLEN.
THIEVES BUSY IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, August 20. A daring burglary was committed in Dominion Road last night, when thieves broke into the premises of Richai’d John Cates, a grocer, and stole over £IOOO worth of tobacco, cigarettes and footstuffs. Although a night watchman patrols the shops, which are situated near the tram terminus, the activities of the intruders did not draw his attention. It is thought, that the thieves had a motor car waiting at the front door to carry the goods away, as with the exception of a few sticks of tobacco, which were in a box in the office, the whole of the tobacco stocks were cleared.
Entrance was gained by removing a panel from a strongly barred back door. This had been torn out in pieces after a chisel had been used to cut small openings in the wooden door. The windows of the shop are covered with strong iron bars. The thieves must have climbed into the back yard across a section from a side street. There are many footprints on the earth in the garden at the rear of the shop, acrqss which the intruders went to get to the back door.
