WASTE BY FIRE

LARGE YEARLY LOSSES.

“MUCH COULD BE PREVENTED”

“Every year over £1,000,000 worth of property goes up in smoke,” said the chairman of the Fire Boards Conference, Mr. D. E. Wilkie, at Wellington. Mr. Wilkie said this was a huge waste and loss, much of which could be prevented, yet nothing was done. Members of Parliament talked about every other subject, some of which were of no importance. When one particular aspect of trade or industry showed a small loss they talked and talked about it, yet no party in the House seemed to concern itself with the huge economic loss‘ annually caused by fire. Fire prevention was a most important national service.
