PRESENTATION OP NOAD SHIELD. Mr. Marsh, President of the local branch of the Teachers’ Institute, congratulated the Foxton team on its success, and stated that he was sure the standard of football would be raised through these competitions. He called on Mr. fktss (headmaster of Levin) to make the presentation.
In his opening remark Mr. Foss stated his pleasure at .the fine games he had witnessed and the gentlemanly way in which they had been played.
Mr. Noad had handed the shield over:to the Horowhenua Rugby District Council with the wish that it should be • used towards fostering school football. The trophy had been in turn handed over to the Teachers’ Institute who had decided to allocate it for a seven-a-side competition. Its initial stages had been fraught with great success. The best team had won and he congratulated the team and those responsible for their fitness on their fine showing. With great pleasure he presented the Shield to Mr. Mason on behalf of Mr. Noad, saying that it was only for a loan. In reply Mr. Mason (headmaster, Foxton), stated his pleasure and •pride in the plandits hurled at the team, because they were to a certain extent merited. In-, Foxton they had fine material and their success was due to the coaching of Mr. Procter and the co-operation of the boys. He took the opportunity to thank Mr. Noad for the handsome trophy donated for school football. He had been greatly pleased .to witness, the sportsmanship displayed by all competitors. He paid a tribute to Mr. MacDonald who had worked hard in the organizing of school football competitions. In conclusion he called for cheers for Shannon (runners up) and the other competing teams.
The Foxton teams wish to acknowledge their thanks. for the bountiful afternoon tea provided through the generosity of a local resident.
FOXTON SCHOOL’S ENVIABLE SPORTS RECORD.
The Foxton State School has now established an athletic record that can be equalled by few schools in the Dominion. Trophies won year in the sports field are as follows: —(1) The Shield for athletics. (2) The McKelvie Cup for 220 yards boy’s championship, (won by B. Coley), both won at Sanson Sports. (3) The Hobson Shield for athletics for schools in Horowhenua District. (4) The Austin Banner for 15-a-side Rugby Football, out of the 8 games played Foxton won 7 and drew 1. (5) The Primary Schools swimming championship of the Manawatu centre, (won by G. Hirini). (6) The Noad Shield, for Primary 7-a-side football won on Saturday last. Although nothing has yet been definitely arranged it has been mooted that a social evening is to be tendered to the boys and gilds who took part in the winning of these trophies and for the presentation of some of .the above.
If local opinion went for anything the Foxton Juniors did not have “a look-in” with their match against Miranui on Saturday, but, contrary to all expectations, they defeated the winners of the season’s competition by 8 points to 3 in the first round of the Knock-out Competition —and apart from one Third grade enthusiast —did not have a single local support on the line to barrack them to victory. The game was hard throughout, and at half-time no score had been registered. With the sun and wind against them in the second spell, Foxton drew first blood with a penalty kick by Huff. Shortly after Miranui were awarded a try on the corner post, which was not converted. Foxton rushed play into the home team’s twenty-five and it was not long before the backs sent the ball out to G. Williams, who short-kicked, rapidly followed up, took the leather on the full and dashed over' to score a brilliant and' winning try. Huff converted. The game ended with Foxton attacking strongly.
A practice will be held in the practice shed at 6.30 o’clock sharp on Thursday evening for the Foxton Juniors. A full muster requested, as Mf'. Roore will give the team half an hour’s instruction.
