HEMP MARKET.
JULY GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow, and stripper slips for the month of July have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: — Ports G.F. H.F. L.F. C.
Twenty-nine bales at Auckland, 58 at Wellington, 34 at Foxton, .1 at Blenheim and 16 at Lyttelton were rejected. Thirty at Foxton were condemned.
The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Fine nil (27), good fair 335 (242), high fair 1074 : (2361), tow fair 1606 (1877), common 542 (473), rejected 138 (98), condemned 30 (.nil), a total of 3725 bales as against 5078 graded the same- period last year, a decrease of 1353 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were Auckland 859, WeL lington 693, Foxton 826, Picton 43, Blenheim 69, Dunedin 119, Pt. 'Chalmers 76, Bluff 778, Lyttelton 182.
The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow: —
Eighteen bales at Auckland, 27 at Wellington, 13 at Foxton, 2 at Bluff were condemned.
The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Ist grade 194 (96), 2nd grade 673 (1250), 3rd grade 267 (153), condemned 60 (17), a total of 1194 bales as against 1516 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 322 bales.
The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 319, Wellington 186, Foxton 160, Picton 14, Blenheim 30, Pt. Chalmers 23, Bluff 375, Lyttelton 86, Dunedin 1. Stripper tow: —Forty-five bales at Auckland 1 , 18 at Wellington, 188 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Twenty-six at Auckland, and eighteen at Foxton were graded 3rd grade. One at Auckland was condemned. A total number of 296 bales as against nil, showing an increase of 296 bales.
iStripper slips:—Eight bales at Auckland, 54 at Wellington and 31 at Lyttelton were graded 2nd grade. One bale at Auckland was condemned. Forty-five bales at the Bluff were passed for export. The total number graded was 139 bales as against 42 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 97 bales.
HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE.
The High Commissioner’s cablegram, dated the 6th inst. reads: — Hemp, Manila market easier and demand is limited. “J” grade, AugustOctober shipments quoted at £42 10/- sellers. Sisal market quiet with value August-October shipments; Tanganyika No. 1, £3B to £3B 5/- and No. 2 20/- less. The New Zealand market is quiet but steady. Buyers mjight pay New Zealand sellers high points £35 10/fair £34 10/- and common £33 10/for August-October shipments.
