Wellington, Aug. 3,
A grant of £15,000 is made on the Estimates for the maintenance of the New Zealand Agricultural College. A vote of £6OO is made towards the cost of the P.A.T.A. inquiry. The amount expended on the cost of the Royal visit in 1926-27 was £43,156. This year’s vote is £20,000. On account of extensive overhaul and refit of H.M.S. Dunedin, in England, a vote of £30,500 is made in the Navy Estimates.
New Expenditure proposed in the Navy Department is £1,200 for anti-gas equipment, £SOO for crane for naval store at Auckland, £SOO for moorings, etc., for battle practice targets, £1,500 for replacement of Orkanu recreation huts, £4OO for fitting H.M.S. Philomel with wireless telegraph apparatus, and £15,000 for expansion work at the naval base at Devonport. The expenses of the Customs Tariff Commission are shown as £650.
The amount of £143 paid as duty 6n artificial poppies imported from England by the R.S.A. for sale to the public to be refunded. Last year the refund of excise duty on local-grown tobacco not suitable for the manufacture of cigarettes was £3,133. On account of the large quantities of such tobacco now being manufactured in New Zealand, the vote this year is increased to £B,OOO. An increase in the number of concilia/tion disputes during the year accounts for a £I,OOO vote for fees being over-expended by £439. For the same reason, the travelling allowances and expenses of assessors exceeded expectations in ' a similar proportion.
