HAWKE’S BAY DEFEAT MANAWIHENUA. Before an attendance of about four thousand people at Napier on Saturday Hawke’s Bay defeated Manawhenua by 16 points to 0. Following a week’s rain, the ground was sodden, with sheets of Avater in places, AV'hilst the game for the most part was played in rain. These conditions made play of a forward nature, but both teams endeavoured to.make the game open. In this respect Hawke’s Bay were most successful. At times their rearguard participated in some really brilliant passing rushes, considering the ! J greasy ball. By receiving a liberal amount of the ball from his foryvards, Edwards, the Hawke’s Bay half, was able to set his backs in motion, and, as a result, they were always dangerous. The Manawhenua backs indulged in individual rather than combined play, Hunt • and Brophy being most prominent, .while Jacob went through a tremendous amount of work beside the serum. The game in the first half Avas very even, and at the conclusion Hawke’s Bay had scored five points, the remaining scores Avere obtained in the second half. At halftirme the score was equal, Bay snatching the victory in the dying stages. i The combined team front Te Kawau and Oroua which met Manawatu at Palmerston on Saturday suffered defeat at the hands of the ■ home team by 18 points to 8 after an uninteresting game. A dramatic incident occurred just before the final Avhistle Avhen (Walker (ManaAvatu) and Drummond (T.K.) came to bloAvs and Avere ordered off.
