TANGI AT MOTUITI.
OLD CUSTOM DYING OUT. At present a tangi is being held at Motuiti pah, distant about three miles from Foxton, where Maoris from far and near are mourning the death of the late Rev. H. T. Paerata, whose interment will take place tomorrow afternoon. The casket containing the body is in a small tent near by the meeting house at the head of which are enlarged photographs of the deceased and a near deceased relative. Sitting on either side of the casket are the widow and female relatives of deceased. A large marquee adjacent is being used for the entertaining of guests, while the meeting house is utilised to accommodate visiting Maoris. On Sunday a large number of pa!keha visitors were present and the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) ex- ' tended on behalf of the Foxton public his sympathy to the relatives and referred to te life and work of the deceased. The Mayor’s remarks were interperted by Mr. Jones who subsequently thanked the Mayor for his expressions of sympathy which mere deeply appreciated by the Maoris assembled. The visitors were hospitably entertained by the Maoris.
