WOMAN SHOPLIFTER FINED
Auckland, July 23. In sentencing Margaret Walker (21), who pleaded guilty to stealing from city shops dress work valued at £1 19s Gd, a silk velvet frock valued at £7 7s and a handkerchief, Mr. R. W. McKean said that if fines in these cases did not prove a deterrent the only course was to send shoplifters to prison, but owing to the accused’s youth and previous good character he would not take that course on this occasion.
He imposed fines totalling £lO and made an order for the restitution of £9 (is Gd.
