The County Clerk pointed out that the cost’of maintenance of the Awahuri-Palmerston North section of the Sanson-Palmerston North Highway in the Kairanga County was £l5O per mile, four miles of which was tar-sealed, while the Taita Gorge in the Hutt County which was three miles in length cost £386 per mile. It is interesting.to note that the cost of maintaining the highway from Cheltenham to Mangaweka, a distance of 40:} miles, worked out at £63 per mile. •
