Hirini made a good attempt at goal. Foxton 3 Shannon 0.

Matthews secured to pass to Hirini who made a good run, but was well tackled. Shannon forwards broke away with the ball, but Rickerby was too fast, kicking to H. Gardiner, who kicked high. The blue forwards combined in a dribbling • j rush ending within yards of the red line. Adams secured to try and get ‘ ovei*, but was held up, Shannon forwards breaking away. M. Coley, RColey, Adams, Graham, Rossiter, Easton, Bills, Hoffmann, Thompson, Rickerby. FOXTON v. OHAU. The second round of the Austin Banner matches was commenced on Saturday, when the local school team journeyed to Ohau. Having beaten Ohau by a substantial margin in the first round it was expected that Foxton umuld have an easy task in the second round, but on the contrary the combined OhauManakau team proved worthy opponents. Foxton, losing the toss, kicked off against the wind; but the forwards who had no fire in them, did not make the most of theii’ opportunity. Rickerby, Adams, and Rossiter were all prominent in solo rushes, which failed for lack of support. Campbell, on the home side, proved himself a thorn in the side* of Foxton’s attacks, the Foxton boys laying in quite a stock of “dummies.” The first score came from a fine concerted action in which all the' Foxton backs handled for Bert Coley td score right in the corner. “Jerry” failed with the difficult kick. Foxton 3—OhauManakau 0. The home side immediately set out to equalise the score, but the Foxton boys were too sure on defence. Half time sounded shortly after with Foxton still in the lead. On resumption of play, the visitors were penned in their twenty-five, but the combined team could not push home their attack. Foxton forwards, by a senes o dribbling rushes took play to neu tral territory, where from a lme out be backs secured for Kura to race over well out. The kick at goal JSed Foxton 6-Ohau-Kanakau

nil. The home team from the kick off attacked hotly, and catching the Foxton backs out of position, their wing-threcquarter crossed well out. Campbell was unsuccessful with the kick. Foxton 6 —Ohau-Manakau 3. This reverse woke Foxton up and they kept the home side on the defence for the remainder of the game. . “ in m o .s "h s S ?! G 93 SP 'o 3 go'l-2 -G Oh i? q j ft o

'Six thousand spectators who attended the Palmerston Showgrounds yesterday saw the eom- ' hined Manawatu-Horowhenua team go down by 23 points to 3 to Wairarapa. . ..•> By no stretch of the imagination could the game be called interesting as the “combined” team lacked combination. When the visitors got going it was, only a question of how many points they would pile on. Until half-time Manawhenua did appear to have a fighting chance but the tactics of the Wairarapa team in the second spell were demoralising. MAORIS DEFEAT BUSH. Pahiatua, July 20. Millington, July 20. At a fully-attended meeting of the management committee of the New. Zealand Rugby Union to-night the following letter was received from the "Wairarapa Union: — “In the recent Shield match played at Masterton between Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay, my Union directs me to draw your attention to the inclusion of AY. Barclay in the Bay team. From a reliale quarter, Barclay did not leaye Auckland until June 20, and was therefore not eligible to play for the Bay team under rule 43 of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s rules governing the selection of representative teams. Prior to the game, on July 9, Wairarapa questioned the bona fides of Barclay. Hawke’s Bay proved he had been a resident for fourteen days as provided by local unions for club contests. Hawke’s Bay have clearly broken the rule and we ask the New Zealand, Union to take action.” A lengthly discussion ensued. Eventually it was decided to request the Auckland Union to furnish evidence as to what qualifications, if any, Barclay possessed to play for Auckland this season, and also as to the date on which he left Auckland. It was also decided to ask the Hawke’s Bay Union for the date of Barclay’s arrival in their district. Both unions were asked to furnish the information by noon on Saturday next in time for a special meeting’of the New Zealand Union to dea? with the Wairarapa protest. It was agreed that all challenges for the Ranfurly Shield should he suspended in the meantime.
