UNEMPLOYMENT .
Owing to the temporary closing of some of the local flaxmills, a number of men/some with dependants, are unemployed.
Several cases of distress have been relieved by the charitable aid Board and local Dorcas Society. The Alayor (Mr. Perreau) in referring to local unemployment, in- * forms us that the Council found employment for. a numer of men when the recent loan money for roads and footpaths was being expended. This work was now completed and 1 there was no extraordinary work which the Council could undertake, except the construction of the swim ming baths from money raised by public subscription. The construction of the baths was now under consideration and a proviso would be made that the contractor would give employment to local men. He expressed the hope that when the milling operations commenced those at present out of employment would be absorbed. He added that if any one requiring casual labourers would apply to him he would be pleased to forward names of men re-, quiring work.
