TOTAL, 1,500,000. INCREASE SINCE EAST CENSUS. According to the latest monthly Abstract of Statistics, the total population of New Zealand at April 1, 1927, was 1,487,980, inclusive of (31,234 Maoris. With the inclusion of its overseas dependencies the Dominion had, in round numbers, a. population of one and a half millions, the precise figure being 1,495,134. Since the census of April 20, 192(3, the increase of population jn New Zealand proper has been 29,841, equal to 2.12 per cent. Of this increase, approximately 57 per cent, was due to excess of births over deaths, and 43 per cent, to excess of arrivals over departures. The estimated populations of provincial districts (inclusive of Maoris) at April 1, 1927, are as follows: — Auckland 484,34(3 Hawke’s Bay 71,7(33 Taranaki 73,059 Wellington 287,959 Total, North Island 917,127 Marlborough 18,939 Nelson 51,381 Westland 15,589 Canterbury 219,597 Otago 148,087 Southland (30,0(30 Total, South Island . 520,853. The estimated populations of urban areas (inclusive of Maoris) at the same date are: — Auckland 202,400 Wellington 120,750 Christchurch 122,000 Dunedin 83,250 Hamilton 17,140 Gisborne 15,370 Napier .18,080 Hastings 15,050 New Plymouth 10,790 Wanganui 27,180 Palmerston North 20,540 Nelson 12,010 Tiniaru , 17,330 Invercargill 22,590
