RANGATIRAS!

BRITISH MOTOR ’ DELEGATION,

Members of the British motor trade delegation were described last week as rangatiras in the tribe of British trade.

Mr. G. H. Scott, presiding at the" dinner to the delegation, said it was only right that, regarding them as such., New Zealanders should greet them in characteristic language. He therefore extended the hand of friendship, and called: “Haeremai! Haeremai 1”

Sir A. Boyd-Carpenter was compelled to admit that this was a new one on him.

The Right Hon. IT. G. Coates took up the spirit of this comparison and said that he had difficulty in impressing in England with the difference between a native and a Maori. “I am a native of this country,” lie said, “and as I could not convince the people at Home of the difference I was called a Maori. (Laughter). He reminded the delegation I hat it was just as well that it did not come out in the days of our childhood, as the Maori's would have opened their hearts and ovens, particularly their ovens, and given them a greater welcome even than was extended at this function.
