RANiFURLY SHIELD MATCH. HAWKE’S BAY VANQUISHES WAIRARAPA. TWO PLAYERS ORDERED OFF Ten thousand people witnessed the struggle for Dominion Rugby supremacy at Masterton on Saturday, when Hawke’s Bay recovered the coveted Ranfurly Shield and defeated Wairarapa by 21 points to 10. Bay forwards won the day. Their combination was 'superior to that of the holders who seldom displayed any genuine team work. They were beaten for the ball in both line-out and scrum, and only rugdefence by the home side presented the Bay from rattling on a bigger score.
Both teams were in great fettle and the' smothering tactics of both sides broke up most of the passing rushes. Early in the first spell each side forfeited a player, Q. Donald and M. Brownlie, who were caught handling each other on the side of the scrum being ordered off. 'Scoring opened in sensational fashion. 'Harvey, the burly Wairarapa lock, headed a loose rush in the Greens’ territory, and was joined by Roache, the full-back, who booted down field. Corkill was beaten by the bounce, and Roache followed up to give the leather another lusty boot, which sent it over the Hawke’s Bay line. An exciting race saw the Wairarapa full-back Hop on the ball between the posts. Gundy goaled. Wairarapa s—'Hawke’s5 —'Hawke’s Bay 0.
The best play of the match so far saw Hawke’s Bay even the scores just before the spell closed. Grenside made a strong run, and snappy passing by Blake., C. Brownlie, and Huxtable saw the winger Hash over in the corner. Grenside goaled with a splendid kick, and the spell ended with the score showing 5 all.
Grenside placed Hawke’s Bay in the lead by putting over a, penalty goal from about the quarter mark. Hawke’s Bay essayed passing from a serum, but Cundy intercepted, and got clear away. The •peedy Cooke was beside him in a hash, and, receiving the ball in centre field he raced away to score a sensational try under the posts. The Wairarapa supporters went wild with delight when Cundy placed the home team in the lead again by 'goaling. Barclay and C. Brownlie headed a foot-rush which swept all before it. Cooke and Roache valiantly attempted to stem the tide, but were .brushed aside, and Barclay scored close to the posts. Grenside made no mistake with the kick. Hawke s Bay 13 —Wairarapa 10. On resuming, Cundy made a brilliant attempt at goal from halfway from a penalty. This was Wairarapa’s last despairing effort as thereafter it was all Hawke’s Bay. J. Donald, the Wairarapa captain, who had been “out” three times during the match, collapsed again; and had to leave the field, being replaced by E. B. Booth. Hawke’s Bay were going well now, and from a sweeping forward foojtrush Swain 'ficorejd, Grenside this time failing to find the uprights. Hawke’s Bay IC—Wairarapa 10. Hawke’s Bay kept up the pressure, and a nice passing movement, in which Grenside and &• Gcmmell figured, saw Huxtable cross for his second try. Grenside finished the match in appropriate fashion by goaling with a splendid kick. Hawke’s Bay 21—Wairarapa 10. Hawke’s Bay thus regained the coveted shield, and so overjoyed were their supporters that they rushed the field and carried the team off shoulder high.
During the first half when the game was willing Maurice Brownlie and Quentin Donald ran into each other’s arms and angrily glared at each other, the referee thought it was time to take firm control of the game, and summarily ordered* the pair of famous 1924 All Blacks off the field. Fairbrother had to take Q. Donald’s place as hooker, with Irvine, while Hawke’s Bay carried on without a wing-for-ward.
It is not often a full-back has the honour of scoring a try in a Ranfurly Shield match, but Roache achieved this distinction on Saturday. The bounce of the ball beat Corkill, the Hawke’s Bay full-back, and Roache, who had followed up fast, booted the leather away downfield. An exciting race ensued. Grenside hurled himself at the lea-
ther, but 'Roache, with another hefty kick, sent the leather flying over the line, and careering after it hurled himself on the ball between the posts. A Hawke’s Bay player, in attempting to avert the score, collided with Roache and knocked him out for a time. The Wairarapa full-back was cheered to the echo for this brilliant solo effort upon recovering.
At Auckland on Saturday, the Auckland Rugby representatives defeated the Maori touring team in the first match of its lour at Eden Park to-day, by 31 points to 6. The match was played in heavy rain, the state of the ground militating against good back play. There was ah attendance of about 5000. The visitors were not at full strength.
