BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening. Reports were read and dealt with as follows: — WATERWORKS REPORT. The waterworks foreman reported that during the month he had been engaged on the following works: —Repairing valves, replacing hydrant rubbers, caulking pipes in tower, laying sewer and water connection, and cutting lupins on the road fronting the council's property. Pumping Station Report: During the month 980,000 gallons of water was pumped, the maximum current used being 32 amps. —Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported as follows: — During the month the road staff has been engaged on the following works: —Planting -trees on Target Reserve, metalling * and blinding Sandon Road, digging drain south side of Jeuks Street, metalling Cook Street footpath, cleaning drain through Messrs Ross, Rough and Co’s, property and Reeve Street, grading Cook and Putter Streets, putting in culvert to Police Station yard, opening up water channels in Cook and Futter Streets, and general maintenance. Or. Cowley brought before the notice of the Council the bad state of Purcell Street. The Mayor stated that the road staff would attend to this street at an early date. A shortage of metal had held .this work up. SURFACE WATER IN UNION STREET. Mr. Rouse waited on the Council requesting that something he done to relieve the surface water from off his property in Union Street. As a result of the heavy rain during the week end, he said,, a stretch of surface water 14 ft. wide and from three inches to three foot six inches deep had formed in front of his home. Or. Cowley said the matter should he attended to immediately: It was a matter of urgency. The Mayor said the matter would be referred to the road foreman for attention. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows : From British Pavements Ltd., stating that they had 100 yards of metal left over which they were prepared to hand over to the Council gatis. They also made application for final payment in connection with their roads and footpaths work. — Payment to be made, the Clerk pointing out that: the value of the metal was in the vicinity of £6O. From the Town Clerk, Palmerston North, re engineer’s expenses in connection with the Manawatu-Oroua River Board Commission, the Council’s quota being 19/1. —Passed.for payment. From Mr. W. Nye enclosing an account for 30/- incurred in cleaning his drain as a result of a blockage allegedly caused by refuse from a Council drain, and asking the Council to pay same. Crs. Cowley and Rangiheuea considered the matter should have been referred to the waterworks engineer prior to Mr. Nye having the drain cleared. —Council to take no responsibility. From the Tauranga Borough Council asking the Council to support a remit to bring pressure to hear on the Government to have unauthorised expenditure increased from £SO to £IOO. —Not supported. From the Borough solicitors, re drain through Messrs Ross, Rough and Co’s, drain. —Received. From the Tennis Club asking if the Council would sell its old shed in Union Street. —Decided to remove the shed to the Council yard for use there. GENERAL.

The tender of Mr. F. Harris to paint “parking” signs for the sum of £1 17s fid was accepted. , TRIANGLE WATER. TROUGH. Cr. Ross drew attention to the unsightly water trough at the Triangle and suggested that it should be removed to a more suitable place. The tap was continually left running and water was becoming a nuisance.

It was decided to do away with the old trough altogether and build a new concrete one at the end of Clyde Street.

HALL CARETAKER'S COTTAGE. 'Flip Mayor reported that the Town Hall caretaker’s cottage was now practically completed and that the contractors had done, their work well and made it good job of the building.

Cr. Parkin pointed out that there was a lot of rubbish lying about the yard, which it was decided to have removed.

Tt was also resolved to erect a Cyclone fence, and lay down a concrete path. , The surplus loan money over and above what is required for the erection of the building will not be lifted.
