PREVENTING FLOODS
PROPOSED WORKS AT SHANNON.
•Shannon, J une 28,
Means of improving the Koputaron stream, so as to minimise the risk of lloods and to provide better drainage for the adjacent land, formed the subject of a report submitted to the last meeting of the Buckley Drainage Board by the engineer (Mr. F. C. Hay). Mr. Hay suggested that a central ditch five feet in width should he dug, in order to lower the bottom of the stream by about 3.1 feet, although in the worst place it would be lowered by no less than five feet. This work, involving the excavation of some 400 yards of material, could be done during the dry season by hand labour. He suggested also that five floodgates should be constructed at the outlet of lateral drains, in order to prevent Hood-water hacking up these drains and inundating the adjacent lands. On each side of the stream banks should he erected to the height of the railway embankment, connecting with the stop-hanks at the floodgates. These banks would he 50 feet apart, and their average height would he 4 feet. Mr. Hay estimated that the cost of the work would he approximately £2500, details of the proposed expenditure being as follows: Stophanks, £.1200,; deepening of stream, £800; floodgates, £300; bridge, £2OO. The engineer considered-that- the proposed works would greatly improve the drainage, and would also retain flood waters at all limes when the Manawatu and the Kopntaroa were not in high flood simultaneously. . , ... After some discussion, meinbeis of' the hoard thanked Mr. Hay for his report on the matter, and if: was decided to hold a further meeting in connection with his proposals on Saturday next:
