GOITRE.
A MEDICAL WARNING,
Sydney, June 25.
In a lecture under the auspices of the Medical Society, Dr. Poate said that statistics show that the incidence of goitre had definitely increased during the past, twenty years. He pointed out also that goitre was much more common in women, and said that the presentday women endeavoured to attract the opposite sex by living up to the standard of the male. This, he considered, was offering a physical insult to the thyroid gland, and if modern girls continued their perpetual jazzing, cigarettes, cocktails, and quest for excitement they could not but expect it to have a debilitating effect on their nervous system. It was bound to bring about a greater prevalence of ophthalmic goitre. Dr. Poate quoted statistics collected from one of Sydney’s leading hospitals, showing the disappointing results obtained by X-ray treatment of ophthalmic goitre. He stressed the slow progress in many cases under purely medical treatment, and the excellent results obtained by surgery in suitable cases.
