SATURDAY’S REP. MATCH,
HOROWHENUA DEFEAT MANAWATU.
A large crowd of spectators witnessed the Horowhenua-Manawatu rep. match at Shannon on Saturday. The ground was in fair condition and there was no wind. The game was hard-fought throughout, and it ivas only during the last few minutes of play that Horowhenua snatched the \-ictory, when Jacob sent the hall over from nearly half way. The game was •controlled by Mr. K. Da\ds. The game was opened by the Manawatu forwards attacking, but. it was not long before the Red (Horowhenua) backs were set in motion. Ryder managed to save a difficult situation, but from a scrum the Green (Manawatu) attack began again. Jacob, made things look promising with a Bno kick, carrying the leather to within ten yards of the Green line. The Red attack grevr more spirited at this, and soon McDonald was seen sprinting down tho line, sending a splendid pass to Hakaraia, who had no difficulty in scoring between the posts. Jacob converted. Horowhenua 5; Manawatu 0. Once again the Red backs got going, Satherley centreing after a fine run down the line. Heatley, however, intercepted and got in a good line kick. The Horowhenua backs were now playing splendidly, and the forwards were able to stem most of the Green back movements. Jacob was prominent in a rush for the lino, but lost the ball before he had got far. Then an excellent kick by Brophy, tho Manawatn centre three-quarter, sent play up field, and Akuiara was given the opportunity for a shot at goal from a penalty, but failed. Brophy initiated' an attacking movement, which resulted in Crawford scoring under the posts. Akuira converted. Manawatu 5; Horowhenua 5.
The second spell was opened aggressively by Manawatu, who began to turn the tables on their opponents, who had up to then had the best of the game. After fast back play they Avere awarded a free kick, Ayhich resulted in a goal by Akuira. Manawatu 8; Horowhenua 5. McDonald then led a Red at-
tack, in which Jacob figured pro- , minently. ‘ The Green forwards, led by Heatley and Walden, began a good, dribbling rush, which was stemmed by Jacob. DeAve and Tremewan then took the ball at their
toes, and the latter would have
scored but for a knock on. Wal- - kcr, however, got the ball and dived over in the corner, Aknira failed with the kick. Manawatu 11; Horowhenua 5. Hakaria, Satherley, and Hunt figured in the Red attack, and soon McDonald got the ball, crossed in the corner, and scored between the posts. Gleeson just managed to convert. Manawatu 11; Horowhe-
nua 10. Play now grew faster, and a good Green passing rush Avas spoiled by Brophy knocking on. Jacob tried to put across a penalty goal, but just failed. . Jacob took another free kick, this time successfully. Manawatu 11; Horowhenua 13.'
Dewe, Brophy, and Darragh then opened a Green attack, the latter scoring in the corner. Akuira just fell short with the kick. Manawatu 14; HoroAvhenua 13. Offside play soon gave another free kick to Horowhenua, and Jacob, to the delight of the crowd, put across a remarkable kick from near half-way. ManaAvatu 14; Horowhenua lfi. • Had play lasted another two minutes it is almost certain that Manawatu would have scored again, for a splendid aggressive position had been obtained at the time of the final whistle. INTER COLLEGE MATCH. PALMERSTON HIGH SCHOOL DEFEAT WANGANUI TECHNICAL. The above match was played on the Palmerston North show grounds on Saturday afternoon and resulted in another win for Palmerston High School by 11 points to 3. The ground was greasy and a shower ol rain in the second spell made the ball difficult to handle. In the opening stages Wanganui dominated and scored a try, but from this out until the last stage of the game the lighter team dominated the game, winning by 11 points to 3. Mr. Lo-we controlled the game which was a fine exposition of Rugby. Feilding Agricultural College were too heavy for the Palmerston North High School second fifteen on Saturday whom they defeated by 14 points to 6. The Manawatu B representative team visited Kimbolton on Satoday, and met Oroua representative team, the latter vvinning by 14 points to 9. AUSTIN BANNER MATCH. FOXTON DEFEAT OHAU-MANA-KAU BY 23 POINTS TO NIL. On Saturday Foxton District High School met Ohau-Manakau on the racecourse in a match for the Austin Banner. Foxton kicked off, the forwards combining in a good dribbling rush, the ball going out well up. Hirini cut in to pass to Matthews but the pass went forward. Ohau forwards brought the ball back, M. Gardiner kicking and enabled Foxton to stem the rusk.
The light blue fonvards took the ball at their feet to the Ohau 25. Campbell marked under the posts. From a scrum on the line Oban accepted a force. Foxton brought the leather back, B. Gardiner came smartly round the tight side with the ball at his feet to score in the corner. Hirini missed by inches. Foxton 3, Ohau-Manakau nil. Reg Coley started a Foxton attack, the ball going from Marshall, Rossiter, Graham, Matthews, Avho unfortunately passed forward. Hofmann broke away from the scrum Avith the ball at his feet, Taint saving Avith a mark. Hirini kicked high for Adams to secure. He punted short for H. Gardiner to dive over in the corner. M. Gardiner missed a difficult kick. Foxton 0, OliauManakau nil.
From a scrum in mid-field Ohau hooked (smartly for Campbell to make a. good run to pass to Taha, but unfortunately ho passed too low. Hirini kicked Avell up-field, Ohau’s return kick coming out to Bert Coley who Avas unmarked, and raced over in a good position. Matthews failed to convert. Foxton 9, Ohau-Manakau nil. Foxton kept tho dark blues on the defence, Hirini, Matthews and Graham nearly getting over. Half time came with the score .unaltered^
On resuming play, Foxton continued to press, Taha saving with a mark. Matthews secured, to pass to Rickerby to H. Gardiner who kicked too far enabling Ohau to force. Just, afterwards Hirini attempted to pot a goal but his kick was too low. M. Gardiner at full back picked up to make a good run, to pass to Howard, who ran round behind the posts. Hirini converted. Foxton 14, Ohau-Manakau nil. Ohau worked upfield and had the local boys defending strenuously, until Hirini relieved with a kick. B. Gardiner did good Avork in transferring play to the other end of the field. Hirini nearly goaled from a penalty. Ohau accepted a force. The light blues kept hammering aAvay, 5 yard scrums folloAving in quick succession. Hirini kicked high for Rickerby to gather and pass to H. Gardiner who got over in the corner, although Avill tackled by Ellison, the diminutive full back. Foxton 17, Ohau-Manakad nil. Rickerby was again prominent in opening up for B. Coley, Avho raced over under the posts. M. Gardiner failed to convert. Foxton 20, OhauManakau nil.
Hofmann was prominent in a good solo effort, breaking away from the loose to run nearly half the field but was avcll tackled by Leach. Reg Coley made an unsuccessful attempt to goal from a mark. Hirini secured to pass to Matthews to Rickerby to B. Coley, who again raced over well out. Hirini just missed. Foxton 23, Ohau-Manakau nil.
Mr. Roore Rangiheuea controlled the gaine.
The visitors were afterwards entertained to morning tea at the school. Air. F. A. Mason in a short speech welcomed the team and complimented them on their tine showing(lhe Ohau-Manakau team had only played one match together this season). Mr. Arcus, headmaster, Ohau, said that for various reasons this match had been put off for three years. They had not expected to win, hut had had a sneaking feeling they might have been able to scratch through. His boys had enjoyed the game and that was the main thing. Cheers were given for the visitors, the Foxton team and coach (Mr. Procter) and the girls for their hospitality. Weather permitting, Palmerston North half holidayites will journey to Foxton to-morrow afternoon to meet the local team on the racecourse.
