BEREAVED HUSBAND’S SUICIDE.

A verdict of suicide by hanging was returned by the Coroner Mr. A. J. Graham, -J.P., who conducted an inquest at Palmerston yesterday into the death of Huia George S. Smith, aged 22 years, who was found hanging in an outhouse of his boardinghouse on Friday morn-., ing. - - 4i

Harry Harold Setter,'a drapery salesman, gave evidence to the effect that deceased had boarded with him in Ruahine Street, and had been employed by the same firm as witness. On Thursday evening witness had last seen Smith alive, but on Friday morning there was no sign of deceased. At 9.30, however, a telephone message caused witness to return home, where lie was handed a note from deceased. This note explained that deceased intended to take his life, as he had nothing to live for since the death of his wife, which had occurred seven weeks previously. Expressing thanks to his employers, and others who had shown sympathy with hint at the time of his wife’s death, deceased asked to he buried alongside her.

Remarking that the case was apparently one of determined suicide, the Coroner returned a verdict accordingly.
