AUCKLAND SENSATION
MAX SHOOTS DETECTIVE,
Auckland, June 14. A sensational ol'fair took place about mid-day to-day in a house in Great South Road, Ellerslie. Detective Nalder and Acting-De-tective- PoAver had occasion to interview a man named Athol George Beamish White. It is understood that when both officers Avent into the room where he was, White [licked up a gun and shot at PoAver, the bullet narrowly missing him. Detective Nalder immediately seized White and took him (to the (City Police (Station, Avhcre he was charged with attempting to murder PoAver. While', avlio is twenty five years of age, appeared before Air. J. W. Poynton, S.M., at the Police Court this afternoon. Chief-Detective Cummings asked for a remand until io-morrow which was granted. While then said: “I thought he was trying to put me hack in the asylum. That’s why I tried to murder him. it’s as good as murdering me to put me back in the asylum.” The Magistrate asked accused to reiieaf this statement and advised the Clerk of Court and the ChiefDetective to take a note of Avhat White said. White did so and all that hr said was transferred to paper.
