UNSEEMLY INCIDENT.
SCRIMMAGE BY A DEPUTATION
A. deputation of about 250 unemployed, carrying banners, marched to Parliament House on Tuesday and waited on the Prime Minister, the Minister of Labour, and the Minister of Public- Works. W bile the Ministers were speaking there were-many interjections from the unemployed, despite the attempts of the Labour representatives [iresent to secure a fair hearing for the speakers. A\hen the speeches were concluded, a croAvd pressed round Mr. Coales and individual eases Avere discussed. Then there occurred a scene, arising out of a_ request made to the Prime Minister for a cigarette. When he proceeded to empty his case, there Avas a rush and Mr. Coates was forced back to the wall, a table , avus overturned and smashed, and a typist knocked down, but fortunately not injured. An appeal by one of the crowd, who declared, “This is the way to spoil everything," was howled down. Another man, when the invitation was given to those seeking Avork to hand in their names, called out, “Not at nine bob a day. Come back, you scabs,” and afterwards he wrote, in red crayon, on the wall of (he room. “We want work.”
