MIRANUI (18) v. FOXTON JUNIORS (NIL).
The above junior match was played on the local racecourse on Saturday before a fair crowd of spectators. The game was played on No. 3 ground, owing to No. 1 being covered with surface water. It was anticipated that the local juniors were up against a stiff proposition in Miranui, who are leading in the junior championship competitions, and who recently gained fresh laurels by winning the seven-a-side tournament, in Palmerston North. Miranui possesses a team which could give a good account of themselves in the senior grade. In fact several of their players and in particular, Pichard, their full-back is much above the junior grade. Pickard’s kicking, tackling and fleetness were an outstanding feature of the game. Both visiting forwards and backs displayed good combination and evidence of careful coaching. The forwards dominated the scrums by force'of weight and in five cases out of six got the ball from the serum. Their, backs kept deep in contradistinction to the locals, who played too close up. The Foxton team were much lighter and their forwards lacked ginger in the opening stages of the game. Their backs, too, were not placed to the best advantage. Ross’ position should be five-eight, where better advantage could be taken of the openings he is able to make. A regrettable incident marred the the game in that Lee, of the visiting team, and Stevenson of the home team, were stood on the line for “scrapping.” The incident happened during a strenuous piece of work when Stevenson was struck and retaliated. The referee had no option but to act as he did. Stevenson, was badly missed as he was playing a dashing game and it can safely be said that at least one try would not have been scored had Jie been in his position. Miranui’s scores were, made up of a penalty go.al and unconverted try in the first half and two tries, one converted and a potted goal in the second half, bringing their score up to 18 points without having their line crossed. Miranui attacked from the start and Walls failed to stem the onrush. Ross relieved the pressure with a line kick and shortly after Miranui had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Williams intercepted a pass and spoilt a green attacking movement and Stevenson' workel play back to centre. Pickard, from a free kick had bad luck in not piloting the ball over, the oval striking the bar. Foxton now worked play to Miranui territory and Huff; had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Miranui worked play in front of Foxton’s goal where the locals were penalised for picking out of the scrum and Pickard made no mistake with the kick —Miranui 3 —Foxton nil. Foxton were kept on the defence and ■ from a scramble near the line Walls failed to touch down and Farrell - dropped on it and scored an easy try. Pickard failed to add the major points and the spell ended, Miranui 6 —Foxton nil. Play went up and down the field in the opening stages of the second spell and the local forwards in keeping the game open more than held their own. Royal, Christie, Hornblow and Scott rushed the ball to Miranui’s line and Hartley marked in a good position, but his kick failed to rise and greens worked play back to centre. The local backs were too close up with the result that Croon raced away from centre from the ruck with the yellow. backs following him to cross unimpeded. Pickard goaled —Miranui 15 —Foxton nil. Foxton now put more dash into their play and kept greens on the defence but Pickard time and again sent the ball back with well judged kicks. Crawford picked up from a loose scramble and raced across and Pickard failed with the kick—Miranui 18 —Foxton nil. Christie and Royal were prominent in some attacking movements, but the green defence was too sure and the game ended without further score. Mr. Sciascia controlled the game very efficiently.

Elvy, the All Black, who recently took up his residence at Pahiatua, to the delight of Bush Rugbvites, has suddenly departed. Ilis employer received the following wire from Elvy from Petone on Saturday: “Re-instated in old job, not coming back, writing, Elvy.” This is how the Pahiatua Herald comments on Elvy’s departure: —
“It was a staggering piece of news for every Rugby follower in the Bush. Doubly so when it is explained to those who do not already know that a. number of keen Rugby supporters, with the interests of Bush football, very much at heart, themselves paid all Elvy’s expenses in getting him to Pahiatua and were on the point of paying for his furniture, on the definite understanding that Elvy’s stay in the Bush would be for one season or several months at least.
“It does seen well-nigh incredible that any man should accept of such generous treatment only to turn round almost immediately and without any explanation, leave his benefactors in the lurch with not so much as a “thank you” for the every consideration he has been shown while here. It has left a bitter taste in the mouths of all Rugbvites, and knowing the man, one would hardly believe him capable of the sudden action he has taken. “There may of course be some excuse, but then what excuse could there possibly be? “Morally, if in no other way, lie owed the Bush something, and that he has gone away with that debt of gratitude unpaid is the.unanimous verdict of everyone with an} knowledge of the circumstances.” ' Thirds. —Paraparaumu 12 v.
