Rev. AA. S. Nenl, yof Sanson, will conduct (lie morning service at the Methodist Church to-morrow, and Mr J. C’hrystall the evening service. Owing to the small amount of stock at large on the roads, t lie Levin Borough Council has decided to close the public pound us from July 31, and to dispense ; witlii the services of the ranger front: that date. “After travelling three-; times to different parts of the world, I am more than ever satisfied' that for natural beauty you don't have to go beyond New Zealand to see the finest in tin? world,’’ declared Mr. S. L. P. Free, of MasterfoU, at a gathering in that town.
A very enjoyable social was held in the Presbyterian schoolroom last evening, arranged by the Ladies’ Social Guild. Competitions, games and vocal items were indulged in, and a tasty supper was served at the conclusion. The competitions were won by Mrs Pcrreau and Master Playdock. Mr. J. Holmes Runnicles, of Palmerston North, the well-known teacher of singing, commenced his duties at the local District High School on Friday, as singing instructor. This arrangement entered into by the High School Committee lias been adopted by other schools and should prove of inestimable benefit to the children. “Cases of scarlet fever are considerably on the decrease,” stated the chairman (Sir Jas. Wilson), at Thursday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, “and those admitted recently are not of the same serious nature as the first admissions.” “Diphtheria," he added, “is also very much on the decline, the number of eases at the hospital at the present time being only four.”
Scarlet fever and diphtheria are fairly prevalent in the Palmerston North Hospital district, at the present time, aeeorfliugf to fig-ures supplied to the Hospital hoard on Thursday, by the managing secretary, who stated that during the month 35 patients had been admitted to the isolation wards during the month, 22 of these being scarlet fever and 13 diphtheria cases. The patients in hospital on April 30 were 135. During May 234 had been admitted and 210 discharged while 10 had died, leaving 143 in the institution on May 31.
The hope that the nurses at the Palmerston North Hospital were not being overworked during the present epidemic of scarlet, fever and diphtheria was expressed by Mr. .J. K. Hornblow at Thursday’s meeting of the Hospital Board, when it was reported that a probationer who had been a.t the institution for three days had taken ill and died. The managing-secre-tary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) stated, in reply, that two extra trained nurses had been engaged to assist during (lie present situation, while il had.been arranged, also, that six probationers should lie appointed as soon as their bedrooms were available for occupation. The chairman (Sir James Wilson) remarked that in that case it would, no doubt, be possible to give the staff time off. The secretary agreed, and said that the members of the staff would be given one day off in seven, as decided by the board.
It has been said that the man who causes two blades of grass to grow where only one grew before is a public benefactor. If that lie true —nnd true it assuredly is—what is to lie said of those who established a successful local industry which finds employment for many hands, develops the latent resources of this Dominion and keeps the money in the country? Look at what the poor gum lands of the North and the barren clays of Nelson, at one time considered worthless for agricultural purposes, are now producing. They furnish the manufacturers with the raw material for our local brands. And so excellent is this product that no smoker should fail to give it a trial. He is in for quite a new type, a toasted tobacco, more fragrant, less nicotine, and therefore healthier. A wonderful ' improvement compared with the non-toasted tobacco. There arc three grades — “Riverhead Gold,” very mild; “Toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog), of medium strength, and those who prefer a full body will appreciate “Cut Plug No. 10,” the Bullshoad brand. 11-
