HEMP MARKET

MAY GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of May have been issued by the Department of' Agriculture as follows: The detailed particulars of the hemp graded are: —

Fifty-five bales at Auckland, 88 at Wellington, 104 at Foxton, and 3 at Lyttelton were rejected. The number of bales in each grade were ns follows—the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: —Fine nil (31), good fair 666 (496), high fair 3179 (3521), low fair 3338 (2446), common 831 (432), rejected 250 (256), condemned nil (2), a total of 8264 bales as against 7184 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 1080 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 2197, Wellington 2019, Foxton 1807, Wairoa 260, Piclnn 60, Blenheim 276, Dunedin 304. Iff. Chalmers 90, Bluff 851, Lyttelton 176. Roiuahapa 164, Waikuku 60. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow: — Ports. Ist. 2nd. 3rd. Auckland 88 164 281 Wellington 16 450 71 Foxton 138 227 Wairoa . Picton Blenheim Pt. Chalmers Bluff Lyttelton Waikuku _ 120 Nine bales at Auckland, 11 at Wellington, and 25 at Foxton were condemned. The following shows.the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding (period of last year being given in parenthesis: —lst. grade 242 (188), 2nd. grade 1533 (1437), 3rd. grade 566 (311), 386 bales as against 2168 bales condemned 15 (232), a total if 2,graded the same period last year, an increase of 218 bales. Tlu* number of bales at each port were: —Auckland 542, Wellington 518, Foxton 390, Wairoa 90, Pieton 24, Blenheim 111, Pt. Chalmers 39, Bluff 484. Lyttelton 38, Waikuku 120. Stripper Tow: —Eight bales al Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Three at Auckland were graded 3rd. grade, and 25 were condemned. A total of 46 bales as against 194 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 148 bales. Stripper Slips: —Nine bales at Auckland and 90 at Wellington were graded 2nd. grade. Five at 1\ cllington and 62 at the Bluff were passed for export. Thirteen at tho Bluff were condemned. The total number graded was 179 bales as against 78 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 101 bales.
