CORRESPONDENCE
(To the Editor)
Sir, —1 noticed in your paper that the Manawatu County Council is arranging with the Highways Board, provided the Railway Department are agreeable, to allow the main highway between Himatangi and Foxtou, to be reconstructed in its present position, i.e. alongside the railway track. Well, sir, I have been interested with many other people throughout this district in the agitation for the linking-up of the main trunk line between Levin and Mart on and if the Manawatu County Council and Highways Board carry out this suggestion it means a nail in the coffin of the connecting railway, because the road will encroach on the permanent way, as it does at present. I think, sir, the road constructing policy of the aforementioned bodies is very short-sighted: They are acting on the “penny wise and pound foolish” policy. The new roadway to the west of the present corrugated road has been surveyed and the estimated cost prepared, and in order to save a little to-day it is suggested that the present road be re-constructed and in a few years time spend thousands more to reconstruct it where it should be made now. Surely, sir, it is time someone woke up and stopped this one-eyed blunder before it is too late. May I suggest that all those interested in the Marton-Levin railway agitation get busy before it is too late. Yours etc., PROGRESS.
