MOTOR LORRY MILEAGE RETURNS.

DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL. At yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, the traffic inspector, Mr. W. Berry, drew attention in his report to the new motor '(regulations (regarding motor lorry mileage returns. His report stated: “Under Section 16 (2) of the new Motor Regulations which came to hand last month a clause is provided in it that the mileage returns which have to be furnished by motor lorry owners and drivers may be suspended in any heavy traffic district if each controlling authority in such district agrees by resolution to such suspension. I think it would be as well for this Council to pass a resolution agreeing to such suspension, and then circularise the other local bodies in the heavy traffic district to see if they will agree to such suspension. Although these returns are sent in I am certain they are not correct, as the lorry drivers have stated to me that they cannot be bothered writing down every day the distance they have travelled.” It was pointed out that the whole of the local bodies in the highways district would have to agree to the suspension before the provision would become operative. It was decided to test the feeling of local bodies at the next meeting of No. 9 Highways District.
