GAMING HOUSE.
OCCUPANTS FINED £75 EACH. David Wilson and Charles Henry Byers were charged at the Wanganui Court on Saturday with keeping premises in the Avenue as a common gaming house. Both pleaded guilty. Detective Walsh stated that the defendants were arrested the previous afternoon on a search warrant under section 3 of the Gaming Act, 1908, and the information was under section 4 of the same Act. .Inquiries went to show that defendants carried on an extensive bookmaking business, and with this exception they had never been before the Court on a previous occasion, and could be described as of good character. It could also be said in their favour that they had come to the Court and pleaded guilty, and did not try to bolster up the position by telling lies. .Defendants were fined £75 each, with costs 10/-.
