An incident in the Foxton-Hui Mai Junior match at Manakau on Saturday is worthy of record, as showing a true sporting spirit. As a Manakau player was in the act of kicking the ball lie was well tackled and embraced mother earth. His opponent extended his hand and assisted him to his feet as the hall found the line.
“No mail who tries to take shelter behind a woman’s shirty nowadays can be called a coward. Ho may be a magician,’’■ said Lady Nancy Astor in the House of Commons, recently, amid loud laughter. “And here I am reminded,” continued Lady Astor, “of an American’s comparison of modern women’s clothing with barbed wire. It protects the property without obstructing the view.” (Laughter).

A somewhat humorous incident occurred during the progress of a Taranaki football match on Saturday. One of the visiting backs was tackled high by a Clifton threequarter, and the two players stood gazing into each other’s faces for'a brief moment. “Kiss him!” was the ironical comment of an exasperated spectator, the sally drawing roars of laughter from the crowd in the vicinity, especially as the two players concerned showed traces of embarrassment.
“Looking up my dairy for 1857,” writes the Stratford correspondent of the “Taranaki Herald,” “I came across such entries as these: Sold 24-year heifers at £2. Sold fungus lo Mulrce at 3d. Sent potatoes to New Plymouth at -Is per cwt. Mulree took butter at 54d.” This last seems to have been a good sale, for a little later comes the entry: Butter down again to 4d. There would not have been much sale for motor cars about here in those days, bad they been invented.” Smoker’s heart is a distressing malady caused chiefly through the effects of an alkaloid called Nicotine, which is extremely poisonous. Strong tobacco with a high percentage of nicotine should therefore he avoided.' When selecting a brand, the smoker should not he guided by appearance alone, because even an apparently mild cigarette tobacco of a bright lemon colour may contain —and often does contain —an excess of nicotine. It is a peculiar fact that certain N.Z. soils produce a leaf with a very small percentage of nicotine, compared with the foreign type. Take for instance our local brands “Riverhead Gold,” “Cut Plug No. 10,” and “Toasted Navy Cut.” There you have an absolutely pure article, which can be smoked continuously without the slightest after effects. It burns to the last shred, leaving the month sweet and clean. So highly is New Zealand tobacco commented upon by doctors and experts that smokers should acquaint themselves with the merits of our own product by giving the above brands a fair trial. 2.
