A glaring example of the misspelling of New Zealand place names is contained in an issue of the Hull (England) Daily Mail, just to hand. The caption underneath a. photograph of the Duchess of York is as follows: “After leaving Auckland the Duke and Duchess of York traversed “Warketo” on their way to “Rotorus.” Is it no wonder that geography books printed in England for use in New Zealand secondary schools contain such misleading errors.
