FOREIGN IMPORTATIONS. PROHIBITIVE TARIFF ASKED FOR. The conditions of the timber industry in the Main Trunk districts is still occasioning severe anxiety, and steps to brighten the future of Hie business are being considered. Following recent meetings at Raetihi, Ohakune and other centres, a public meeting at Taumarumii yesterday decided to form a branch of the New Zealand Timber Industry Advancement League, and ir was resolved also to ask the Government for a prohibitive tariff on foreign timbers to prevent the competition which has completely disorganised the sawmilling industry' and has swelled the ranks of unemployed.
