FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce' was held in Ross’s Rooms last evening, presided over by the President (Mr. J. K. Hornblow). Also present were: Messrs D. Christie, Barron, McMur ray, Corn, John Ross, Millcn, Thomson, 11. Hornblow, Perreau, Bullard, H. Osborne, Pearson, W. E. Barber, Admore, Newton, and the secretary (Mr. R. Hornblow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Linldater M.P., Hon. Edward Newman, M.L.C., Mason, S. Matter, and J. Moir. NEW MEMBERS. Messrs D. Ball and A. E. Scott were elected members of the Chamber. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report (as previously published) was read and adopted. Mr. Perreau congratulated the Chamber on its successful year and said that much useful work had been accomplished. He was pleased to note that there were new members linking up and this went to show that the Chamber was a live factor and that interest was being evinced in it by the townspeople. CAMPING AREAS. In reply to Mr, Pearson, the Mayor said that camping areas had been set aside for visiting motorists by the Harbour Board and Boroifgh Council, and added that the Council had decided to proride firewood and water for their camping area on Victoria Park. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: — President: Mr. J. K. Hornblow (re-elected); vice-president: Mr. R. Me Murray; committee: Messrs Christie, Barron, Smith, Admore, W. E. Barber, 11. Osborne, C. A. Pearson, W. E. Bullard, I. Corn, J. Thomson, John Ross, and J. Moir; secretary: Mr. R. Hornblow (re elected); treasurer: Mr. John Ross (re-elected); auditor: Mr. S. IT. Poole (re-elected). In returning thanks for his reelection as President, a position which he would much rather had seen filled by some other member, the President said that the Chamber while not possessing legislative powers as was the ease with local governing bodies, played an important part in public affairs and he was sure (lmt local bodies in the town and district were grateful for any suggestions and constructive criticism passed on to them. The Chamber's objective was to co-op-erate with them in all matters connected with the commercial welfare and progress of the town and district. COAL THROUGH FOXTON.. M The President reported on ah'Tpterview he had had with the Bu(\ ness Agent of the N.Z. the shipping of coal tlnwgfi the port of Foxton. The Railways Department required 16,000 tons annually and suggested that the Chamber make enquiries as tp a boat suitable for the work. It was considered that the matter was sufficiently important for a special meeting and it was decided to discuss the matter fully at an early date, the Foxton _Habour Board be asked to send delegates to the meeting. ADVERTISING FOXTON. Mr. Newton put a suggestion before the Chamber that a red light be installed on top of the water tower as a beacon and an advertising medium for Foxton. The tower, he said, could he seen from Levin, Shannon and Palmerston North. The matter was referred to the Borough Council for favourable consideration. Mr. J. Newton as Registrar of Electors, submitted plans showing the alterations in the boundaries of the Manawatu and Palmerston electorates as a result of the last census. • SOCIAL EVENING. At the conclusion of business members adjourned to Grady’s rooms where a social evening was held. Messrs Gibson (President of the* Levin Chamber of Commerce) and Adkin represented the Levin Chamber. Toasts honoured during the evening were: —“The King,” “The Visitors,” proposed by Mr. Admore and replied to by Mr. Gibson; “Local Bodies,” proposed by Mr. Christie and replied to by Messrs W. E. Barber (Manawatu County Council and Foxton Harbour Board), John Ross, M. E. Perreau (Borough Council), R. McMurray (Harbour Board) D. R. Barron (Rabbit Board); “Postal and Railway Departments and Banking,” proposed by Mr. G. F. Smith and replied to by Messrs Newton, H. Hornblow and J. Milieu; “The Entertainers and Caterer,” proposed by Mr. J. K. Hornblow and replied to by Mr. J. Newton jnr.; “The President, Secretary and Press,” proposed by Mr. G. F. Smith and replied to byMr. .J.' K. Hornblow.
During the evening vocal items were contributed by Messrs G. P. Smith and D. R. Ban-on, Mr. J. Newton jnr., presiding at the piano.
