ILLEGAL BOOKMAKING

HOW THEY EVADE PROSECUTION.

Few have any idea of the large amount of illegal betting that is done on races throughout the Dominion, nor the many different methods the book-makers have to safeguard themselves and clients against prosecution. One bookmaker in a southern town has devised a scheme which apparently gives him ft degree of safety that is not enjoyed by many fellow penciljers. He makes house to house calls on his clients each morning there are races, driving a well-appointed car and books their bets at the back door just as if he were booking orders for groceries. Among bis clients there are . many “silver betters,” women and boys, who put on their half-crowns and crowns.

Apparently nothing has more disturbed the business pf bookmakers in Christchurch than the recent prosecutions of clients. Inquiries go to show that the majority of punters have taken alarm, and are not prepared at the moment to do business, say's an exchange. Some of the regular clients, it is stated, have regularly done business under assumed names, and so are not greatly concerned over the question of discovery- Indeed, one of the largest punters in Christchurch makes bets under the name of a leading dignitary of the Church of England. A reporter was also informed that one of the big bookmakers who was compelled to shift his office quarters is now installed in a private house.
