FOXTON-HIMATANGI ROAD.

In connection with the layingdown of the Foxton-Himatangi road as a main highway, Cr. W. E. Barber, (chairman) reported at Wednesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council that he had been in touch with the Public Works Department as to what should be done to improve- the thoroughfare. The original idea, the chairman said, had been to shift the road to a point about 40 feet from the centre of the railway line, but in view of the excessive cost required to do this, the idea had been abandoned in favour of a suggestion to build the present road up to main highway specifications, provided the Railway Department offered no objections. From what he had been led to believe, 'the chairman continued, the railway authorities were quite agreeable to the proposal, with certain reservations, and in furtherance of the scheme, the chairman of the Main Highways Board (Mr. Ronayne) and the district engineer to the Public Works Department (Mr. Woods) were to inspect the road on Monday, June 6. After a discussion it was decided that the chairman and Crs. Boyce and McKelvie and the engineer (Mr. G. Hickford) be present at the inspection.
