CORRESPONDENCE
(To the Editor)
Sir, —I possess a motor car, commonly called an “Elizabeth,” which is fifty-fifty a necessity and family luxury. I also pay an annual fee and driver’s license. I believe the former, which is fairly solid, yoes towards the maintenance and upkeep of our main highways. Well, sir, the highways is where my grouse comes in. “Elizabeth” treats us kindly when the roads are good, for instance in the Horowlienua County. It is a pleasure to ride on such a road, but, sir, when I am compelled to drive the car along the highmays in the Manawatu County, its fair purpatory and spine-tap-ping by the chiropratic method is a king to it. The roads are a continuation of ridges which sets up a terrible vibration and loosens the whole outfit. A friend of mine suggested that in order to get over the difficulty the car be sped up to 30 miles per hour. I tried that, but Elizabeth swung dangerously from side to side. What I want to know is why the Horowlienua County can provide much better roads with more traffic than the Manawatu County? May I suggest, sir, that the Manawatu County Council invite the chairman and engineer of the Horowlienua County Council to a conference which might help the Manawatu County Council in adopting their policy. Yours, etc., SETTLER. [The Manawatu County Council recently conferred with the Highways Board in reference to an improvement in the arterial roads within the County—Ed. H.]
