PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS.

COUNCIL DECIDES TO MODIFY PLANS. A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening to receive #pders for the erection of public swimming baths locally. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau), and Crs. Thompson, Spring, Rangiheuea, Lueinsky, Rand, Parkin, Walker, John Ross, Mr. R. Edwards, of Palmerston North, architect for the baths, was also in attendance. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Cowley. Nine tenders in all were received and were dealt with in committee. The tenders proved to be far higher than the amount already raised for the construction of the baths. Mr Edwards admitted that his lie meeting held some time ago he had said that baths could be erected for the sum already in hand. The tenders received that night were much higher than this, but if the plans were modified he had no doubt that they could be erected for the sum raised. The Mayor pointed out that the resolution on the Council’s books provided that the plans of the baths were to be for one to cost no more than the sum in hand. Mr. Edwards admitted that this plans had not been for baths to cost the sum mentioned. He had acted on the understanding that that sum could be stretched a few hundred. The Mayor said that the best thing to do under the circumstances would be to call tenders for baths for the sum in hand. Crs. Walker, Parkin, Lucinsky spoke in favour of the preparation of new plans to conform with the resolution on the books and the calling of fresh tenders. Cr. Ross said that there was no necessity to call fresh tenders, the tenderers could be consulted and asked for a price for modified baths. The Mayor said as an alternative, another public effort could be held to raise the extra money but he was of opinion that the time was not opportune for that. Two substantial donations had been promised but these have not yet come to hand, and might not now be forthcoming. On the motion of Cr. Ross and Thompson it was decided that haying opened the tenders for the swimming baths, consideration of same be deferred; that Mr. Edwards be asked to amend his plans and specilrations to romply with the Council’s resolution of the 14th February; and that such amended plans and specifications be submitted to the Public Works Committee for approval.
