BEGGAR MAID
MODERN VERSION
BELGRADE ROMANCE,
LONDON, May 9
A modern version of the romance of King Cophetua and the beggar maid is reported from Belgrade, says a Berlin message. The wealthy son of Dr. Benes, the Czecho-Slovakian Foreign Minister, will shortly marry the beautiful 18-year-old daughter of a destitute Hungarian pedlar. They first met when dancing in a Prague cafe, where M. Benes attended night after night until the girl disappeared. He traced her to Belgrade, and, after a long search, discovered her living in a hovel. M. Benes is purchasing a hillside mansion overlooking Belgrade, and a comfortable flat for the bride’s parents.
