ALL SAINTS’ BEACH HOME.

The Matron of All Saints’ Beach Home (Mrs. Bain) reports that as a result of the Birthday appeal made last week, the Home is now well stocked with provisions, etc., which will not have to he replenished for some tune to come. The response was most generous and the Matron is deeply grateful to all those who assisted in any way. Everything asked for was supplied.

FROM MAY 28th to JUNE 4th. A further meeting of local business people was held in the Town Hall supper-room last night to discuss the sub-committee’s report, re the holding of a shopping week. There was a good attendance and the Mayor (Mr. Perreau) presided. The chairman said it had been proposed to hold the shopping week during the present school holidays in order that children’s competitions could be indulged in but owing to other counter affairs it was found impossible to fit in with the school holidays. A canvass of the business people had been made and practically all favoured the proposal and promised financial assistance. The object, lie said, was to attract district people to the town and demonstrate that Foxton could supply their needs equally as well as larger centres. It was for tho meeting to make suggestions and finalise the matter. Mr. Scott (secretary) reported upon the canvass of business people and said all expressed approval of the shopping week proposal and lie read a list of names of those who had promised financial assistance. He had consulted a publicity firm in Wellington who had drawn up a design for a circular, with suitable slogans for distribution among householders. Mr. Christie suggested that the shopping week be postponed until September or October, when a combined gala and shopping week could he held. At present the local drapers were commencing sales. He thought that the circulars should be printed and circulated, however. Mr. Smith agreed that the big event should be postponed'until about October, but this should not interfere with a shop spotting week. They should let the district people know, however, that Foxton had passed the Rip Van Winkle stage of its existence. He favoured something being done immediately. MV. Tongs expressed the opinion that the effort should be general in character and not restricted to drapers sale's. After further discussion it was unanimously decided to hold a shop spotting week from ’2Bth May to June 4th and that circulars should he printed and circulated. Mr. Corn suggested that each business concern arrange, its own competition. The following committee was set up to carry out the details: The Mayor and Messrs Christie, Smith, Ball, Corn, Tong, Ruffle, Hofmann, Desmond, Bullard and Yeo.
