THREE MONTHS FOR RECKLESS DRIVING.
Dunedin, Last Night
Ashley George Eaigan, aged 20, was sentenced on charges of manslaughter and negligent driving when a pedestrian was knocked down by his motor and killed. In connection with this charge a point of law was submitted by counsel during the hearing with regard to the culpability of an unlicensed driver and was reserved to the Court of Appeal. The judge said that there was too much reckless driving, and the Court could not pass over such cases individually, because usually individuals had a good character. If it did, then there would be no examples and no deterrent. Accused was ordered to be detained at the Borstal Institution for three months and disqualified from obtaining a motor driver’s license for three (years.
The Judge added* the sentence ’was one on the second chai’ge. On the first charge the sentence was postponed till the question reserved to the Court of Appeal was settled. Its decision Avould be referred to him and would not increase accused's punishment.
