A THREE-FOLD PLEDGE.
APPROPRIATE ADDRESS TO GIRL GUIDES.
At the Girl Guides’ birthday party held last night, Mrs. Peryman delivered a very interesting addfess on pledges. She said a threefold which they ever kept in memory by their trefoil badge and by their three finger salute concerned unseen things which, after all, were the real things, because the things seen were material and must pass away. Their pledge enjoined (1) loyalty to the King of Kings, to their King and Empire. The honour of their King rested in their hands and their Great Leader said: “I trust you.” (2) service:—To do good to all at the cost even of life itself. Ever service before self. (3) obedience: To Patrol Leader. This meant discipline and every young life needed this.
The Guide Movement, said the speaker, .also was threefold in its aims:— (1) :—lt trained the young to use usefully their spare time, not to fritter it away, but to use it for training themeselves for future service. (2) developed good allround character. Character was the greatest thing they could build and the only thing they could take with them from this world into the Great Beyond. Their pledges developed every side of their manifold nature. The astronomer’s badge taught them to “look up” and in the words of Kepler, “I am thinking thy thoughts after Thee, 0 God.” The book lovers’ badge trained them to use their mental powers and by wide reading become well informed. Many badges trained them in technical and manual labour and in cooking and household duties. The material side was not neglected. (3): —It trained them for citizenship, both citizenship below and the citizenship of the Heavenly Jerusalem. The badge of citizenship was love, a love that served.
