CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’s Rooms on Thursday evening, presided over by Mr. J. K. Hornblow (President). Also present were Messrs McMurray, C. A. Pearson, D. Christie, D. R. Barron, M. E. Perreau, H. Hbrnblow, R. Rangiheuea, I. Corn. Yco, Moiv, Alsop, G. Smith, and the secretary (Mr R. Horpblow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Ross, F. A. Mason, A. E. Admore, W. E. Barber, J. Newton, and H. Osborne. Mr. G. Milieu, who is acting as relieving bank manager (luring Mr. S. 11. Poole’s absence on liolidny in England, was also present. The President extended a welcome to Mr Milieu, on behalf of the Chamber, and hoped that his stay in Foxton would prove enjoyable. Mr. Perreau endorsed the President’s remarks. Mr. Millen expressed his appreciation of the opportunity of being present at the meeting of the Chamber and 'meeting local business men. Foxton was a fine little town, he said, and after listening to the reading of the minutes that evening, he was satisfied that the Chamber was a live body and doing good work in the community. The President extended congratulations on behalf of the Chamber to the Mayor and Crs. J. Ross and R. Rangiheuea, on their success in the recent Municipal elections. Messrs Perreau and Rangiheuea thanked the President for his congratulations and said that if they could assist the Chamber in any way on the Council they would be only too pleased to do so. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: — From the Associated Chambers of Commerce in reference to the holding of a conference on May 4th to deal with the question of overseas publicity.—Decided to support the proposal and to place x the matter before the Borough Council and Harbour Board. From Mr. Hempleman, of British Pavements Ltd., offering to deliver an address on “Modern Road Making,” at an early date. —Accepted. CONTINUOUS TELEPHONE SER- ' VICE. . Mr. Christie reported on the activities of the committee set up to go into the question of a continuous telephone service for Foxton and said that a circular had been drawn up and would be circulated throughout Foxton and district in that connection at an early date. SHOPPING WEEK. Messrs Perreau and Smith referred to the proposal afoot to hold a shopping week in Foxton and it was decided to support the Scheme and the Chamber pledged itself to assist in any way possible. ' SOCIAL EVENING. It was decided to hold a social evening at the conclusion of the business of the annual meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, 26th May, and Messrs Christie, Yeo, Corn, Smith and Pearson were appointed a committee to arrange details.
