MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
LITTLE INTEREST DISPLAYED.
The municipal election took place yesterday, but very little interest was displayed. Out of a roll number of, 928 only 313 recorded their votes. Up to noon only about 50 votes were recorded. The results were announced by the Returning officer at 8 o’clock as follows: THE MAYORALTY. Mr. M. E. Perreau was re-elected unopposed. BOROUGH COUNCIL. E. Parkin 269 John Ross 266 C. Rand 265 . E. Cowley 239 F. Lucinsky 232 M. H. Walker .......... 231 R. Thompson 227 C. Spring 203 R. Rangiheuea 185 (Elected). F. Woods 178 HARBOUR BOARD. H. Berrv 210 J. Chrystall ..? 128 Elected. R, Bryant " 125 R. McMurray ........ 124 Informal .9 HOROWHENUA POWER BOARD. Mr. R. Bryant was elected unopposed to represent the borough on the Horowhenua Power Board. After the declaration of the poll the candidates briefly returned thanks. Mi 1 Spring was in jocular mood. He said he had had the flood to contend with and had won the “drainage lap.” He had not had any previous training but had scored a walk-over. In the Council he would have his say and would want to know about things. “You ought to be proud of me,” lie concluded amidst applause, “and I thank you.” Mr., F. Woods said though not elected he was not down-hearted and would again offer his services at the next election. He. stated that the cutting down of the pine trees in Victoria Park had probably been responsible for his defeat. In explanation of this matter lie said during the gale four trees were blown down and three others were toppling. He called a meeting of the Reserves Committee, As the Mayor was absent, at which he and C-r. McMurray were present \ and they decided to sell the trees at 5/each. The Town Clerk was informed of the decision and he said “fire akead.” The sale of the trees 1 resulted ,in £3 10s being paid into the Council. The Mayor, in a brief speech, said it was a pity that the whole ten candidates could not have been elected. He regretted the defeat of Cr. Woods who had rendered good service during his. term of office. Cheers were given for all the eanlidates. Messrs John Chrystall and McMurray thanked those who had voted for them in the Harbour Board election. When the results were first announced last night, they showed H. Berry top, with 211, followed by R. McMurray 127, R. Bryant 126, and J. Chrystall 124. A re-cmint immediately took place, and reversed the position, as shown above, An official re-count was held this morning, which proved the final announcement to be the correct one. Councillors: Keedwell, Mortensen, Goldsmith, Roe, Bishop, Hutchings, Parker, Harvey, Falloou. C. Blinkhorn (347) defeated A. A. Brown (308) as representative for Levin on the Horowhenua Power Board.
