FOOTBALL.
The competitions under the juris-
diction of the Horowhenua Rugby Union were commenced on Saturday. Two games were played on the local grounds when Awahou juniors defeated Shannon juniors by six points (two unconverted tries) to three, and Foxton thirds defeated Weraroa thirds 10 points to G. Awahou fourths defaulted to Foxton fourths. At Levin, Awahou seniors were defeated by Weraroa seniors by 3 points to nil. At Shannon, Foxton juniors were defeated by Miranui by nine points to six.
The Foxton and Weraroa thirds were very evenly matched and the game was stubbornly contested and (lie visitors were the first to score. Towards the end of the game the local boys kept Weraroa busy on the defence. The local backs played with excellent combination. Hartley and Huff scored for Foxton and Bishop and Roe for the visitors. Mr. T. McDonald refereed. The Awahou-Shannon juniors
match was a somewhat ragged dis-
play compared with the thirds’ ex- ' hibition. The Awahou team were the heavier and did most of the attacking. Mr. McDonald controlled the ganie.
At Levin, the Shannon and Wanderers seniors played a drawn game —3 each. County defeated Otaki by 23 points to 3. The Weraroa Juniors won by default from Wanderers.
In the third grade match, at Levin, Wanderers defeated Shannon by 20 points to 11. In a junior match, Poxton v. Miranui, played at Miranui on Saturday, which resulted in a win for Miranui by 0 points to 6, Rankin and Wright were the local scorers.
On Saturday the Poxton Pootball Club held a successful shop day, as a result of which the Club funds will be considerably augmented. The various competitions resulted as follows: —Cruet set, It. Burnett, No. 45; lady’s pull-over, Mrs Wyllie, No. 114; fruit dish, T. Watson (Shannon), No. 57; gent’s pull-over, J. Moat, No. 150; cigarettes, G. Coley jnr., No. 60; half sheep (weight), Mrs Roore and Mrs Langden, 30-J lbs. (nearest), correct weight, 30 lbs.; half sheep, Mrs W. Swan, No. 22; box chocolates, Miss E. Groome, No. 54; scarf, G. Coley junr., No. 100; dinner, H. Hutchins, No. 82; supper, •G. Coley jnr., No. 3; fowls, R. Cochrane, No. 23; lady’s stockings, Miss Murray, No. 62; scent, H. Nixon, No. 28; baby’s outfit, Miss Joyce Fuller, No. 21; cake, Mrs J. Langden, No. 26; bag flour, R. Cochrane, No. 63; vases, . Mrs Woodham, No. 43; sellers’ prize (10s), Miss M. McCarthy.
