Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 1927. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

■ A local resident who has just returned from Auckland informs us that unless one is early it is difficult to obtain seating accommodation in the Churches on Sundays.

In the election of live trustee; for the Buckley Drainage Board held on Wednesday, Mr. It. A. Speirs topped the poll with 72 votes.

The “Herald” staff desire to acknowledge wedding favours from Mr uul Mrs W. Baker, and join with their numerous friends in wishing them long life, health and prosperity.

A poll was taken this week at Cartel ton on a quest •.on of reverting to rating on capital value or continuing the present system upon unimproved value. The voting was: Capita! value 201, unimproved 24U, votes recorded 447, roll number, 830.-

A painful accident befel Mr. A. 11. Raisin, inspector to the Oroua Rabbit Board, on a farm at Hiwinui yesterday. While carrying a gun Mr. Raisin slipped, with the result that the gun discharged, blowing off two of the man's left finger;;. .Medical attention was immediately summoned and he was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital, where an operation was performed. ' It lias been (decided to give a trial to the stopping of the 2 p.m. Wellington-Auckland train at Levin as from May 2. It is considered that a regular stop at Levin would give a more satisfactory service than stopping at Levin and Ota lei alternately, and it is essential that the, Wellington-Auckland express should reach Levin in time to cross the down New Plymouth there. Arrangements are therefore being made for a regular stop at Levin. At iast meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, the Town Clerk stated that he had been informed by a ratepayer that an >, agitation was on foot to have the proposed route of the road to the new Shan-non-Foxton bridge removed to a site north of Shannon (says the News). He had communicated with the District Engineer, of the Main Highways on the matter, who hud written stating that no such request had been received. Also tlmt the route, which goes down the Shannon-Foxton road and then in direct line across the swamp to the bridge, had been definitely decided upon.

(While returning to Napier from Foxton last Monday, by car, Mr and Mrs Corn senr., Miss Corn and Mr Corn junr., of Napier, and Mrs Corn, of Foxton, had a miraculous escape from serious injury when the car in which they were travelling capsized as a result of a skid ill loose metal a few miles past Waipawa. All the occupants were pinned beneath the car, from which predicament they had to he released by a passing motorist. Mr Corn senr. sustained a sprained wrist, and the Mesdames Corn severe shakings and bruising. The car was hopelessly smashed.

A stout lady entered the smoker of an Auckland tram the other evening. As it happened there was only one passenger when she got in, a working man in the full enjoyment of his pipe. Shuddering with disgust the lady remarked “My good nmn, smoking always makes me feel ill.” “Do it now, Mum,” replied the worker, puffing away, “then you take my tip and knock it orf.” The conductor laughed. But really the smell of some of those American tobaccos would make anyone “feci ill.” The excess of niedtine they always contain, is bad for the smoker, too. Affects heart and nerves. The safest tobaccos are our own New Zealand grown. They contain so little nicotine that they may be. smoked pipeful after pipeful, and they won’t let you down. Full of fragrance and flavour too. Delicious. They owe their line quality largely to the fact that they are toasted in the course of manufacture. A novel idea! Ask for “Riverhead Gold” mild, “Toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog) medium, or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshead) a grand full flavoured kind.* dB.
