BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
FOXTON BRANCH. < The annual meeting of the Foxton Branch of the abovo was held on Wednesday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church, presided over by Mr. Nicholas. Mrs. Porter, organising secretary for the ton province, gave a most interesting and informative address on the work of the society for the past jear. She stated that the society had issued ten and a quarter million copies of the scriptures in fivo hundred and eighty-seven languages during 1926. The New Zealand part of this work was the distribution of 25,762 copies of scriptures. (4,301 bibles, 12,124 testaments, 9,007 gospels and portions) in twenty-four languages. The society did not encourage indiscriminate free distribution, of tho scriptures, because it had been found that if purchased, they were valued a great deal more. The practice was to sell them within the purchasing power of the buyer,, but where there was no purchasing power, they were given free. The result was that for every £1 worth distributed they received in return about 8/-, the balance being mado up from public subscriptions. Tho subscriptions from the Foxton Branch last year were £l2 3s 9d. The election of officers then took place and on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Rev. Mr. Peryman, Mfs. F. Robinson, president, and Miss Robinson, secretary, were unanimously re-elected. It was further resolved to ask each church to assist by appointing collectors for their congregations. Mr. Perymau moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Porter for her inspiring address which was carried by acclamation.
